How to Time a Cross Country Race with Run Lap Tap
The Challenge of Cross Country Timing
Cross country races are chaotic at the finish line. Dozens — sometimes hundreds — of runners finishing within seconds of each other. Traditional clipboard-and-stopwatch methods struggle to keep up.
Run Lap Tap is designed for exactly this scenario. Here's how to set up and run a smooth cross country carnival.
Before Race Day
Create Your Event
Set up a Race event in Run Lap Tap. Enter the race distance (e.g. 3km, 5km) and give it a clear name like "U14 Girls 3km Cross Country".
Choose Your Recording Method
For cross country, you have three solid options:
-
Bib Number Entry — The classic approach. Assign numbered bibs, then type numbers as runners cross the line. Works well with a helper calling out numbers.
-
QR Wristbands — Each runner wears a QR-coded wristband. Point your camera at the finish chute and scan each runner. Faster than typing bib numbers.
-
NFC Wristbands — Runners tap their wristband on your device as they finish. The fastest method but requires NFC tags.
Set Up Your Roster
Add all runners to your roster before race day. If you're running multiple age groups, create a separate event for each. Rosters persist across events, so you only enter names once for the whole season.
Race Day Setup
- Open your event and verify all runners are listed
- Position yourself (or a helper) at the finish line with your iPhone or iPad
- If using QR scanning, ensure good lighting at the finish chute
- Brief your finish-line volunteers on the recording method
During the Race
Hit Start when the gun fires. As runners approach the finish:
- Bib entry: Tap the bib input field and type numbers as they're called out
- QR scanning: Hold your device steady and let runners file past the camera
- NFC: Have runners tap their wristband as they cross the line
- Tap: If you recognise the runner, simply tap their card on screen
Run Lap Tap automatically assigns finish positions in the order you record them.
After the Race
Your results are available immediately:
- View the full results list sorted by finish position
- Check for any missed runners and add them manually
- Export results to CSV for publishing or uploading to your athletics database
- Generate PDF result sheets for posting at the venue
Handling Large Fields
If your event has more than 30 runners, you'll need either a Pro subscription (unlimited runners) or a Race Pass ($4.99 one-off) to unlock that event. Race Passes are perfect for carnival days where you need unlimited runners just once.
Tips for Success
- Practice before race day — Run a mock event to get comfortable with your chosen recording method
- Use an iPad for larger screens — More room for runner cards means faster tapping
- Assign a finish-chute helper — One person calling bib numbers while another records is a winning combination
- Back up with iCloud — Your data syncs automatically, so you won't lose results
Cross country timing doesn't have to be stressful. With the right setup, Run Lap Tap handles the chaos so you can focus on the runners.
